03/25/02Bargaining Continues…But Situation Tense
As Edmonton Superstore and Liquorstore Union members debate whether or not to issue strike notice and "hit the bricks," tense negotiations continue with the Company.
"A lot of Union members have been contacting us and demanding an immediate pre-Easter strike," says UFCW Local 401 President Doug O'Halloran, but, "Most are willing to play wait and see for now." Bargaining commenced right after the strike vote last week and continues this week. "Some progress is being made," says O'Halloran, "But the question remains, Will it be enough?"
O'Halloran says strike notice will be issued if the Company does not move on key matters. "We did not come this far to back down," he says, and adds, "Only a substantial improvement on the Company's initial offer will be brought back to Union members for a vote. As we explained at the strike vote meetings, we will not anger and frustrate Superstore and Liquorstore Union members with a new Company offer with only trivial changes."
O'Halloran did not want to discuss details regarding the content of negotiations right now, but said, "The Company will not doom its employees to an unfair seven year contract without one hell of a fight."
