The Issues
What are the issues in dispute between the company and its employees?

The overall employee bargaining message to the company is:

  • Reward us fairly for our contribution to your success. We need to make a living too! (have a look at THE COMPANY)
  • Provide us with reasonable job security
  • Don't take advantage of us because some of us are young students
  • Give us some fair predictability in our shifts - which can be scheduled 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
  • For part timers who are willing to work hours to make a decent living - let us!
  • Please treat us fairly, with dignity and respect, the same way you expect us to treat you and the customers.
  • In return, we promise to do our best to continue to make you the most profitable food retailer, and one of the most successful businesses in Canada!
Compare and Contrast the Union/Company Positions (as of March 17, 2002)

Here are "point form" specifics of most issues in dispute between the company and the union. They describe where the union wishes to change the existing contract, and where it does not. The company view on each issue is also described.

Remember if something isn't clear, please call the union office. For example, under "benefits", you will see that our goal is "sick days, 100% payment." Sound too ambitious? Remember only full timers receive any sick pay, and they are a very small minority in the work force. They currently are only able to receive up to 6 paid sick days per year, and they are paid 80% of lost wages. Our proposal for full-time employees is to change the 80% to 100%, leaving the number of paid sick days at 6. We are also hoping that the creation of a jointly trusteed benefit plan might facilitate some limited sick time pay for part timers. But that goal is embraced under "benefits - jointly trusteed benefit plan." That is a broad based proposal too difficult to explain in a few sentences. The bottom line is, when in doubt, call us! Often, issues need to be put in a context. If we detailed every subtlety, the text would be hundreds of pages!

Some issues are negotiable. The union position is a proposed package. What is ultimately settled upon is up to you.

We hope that there are no errors or omissions in the text, but if you notice something, let us know. We got this website up quickly to rapidly enhance communication.

If you wish to see your existing union contract, talk to your shop steward or call your union rep!
